This is the comment i posted in the manila standard website where she has a column:
Perhaps you were brought up with a silver spoon in your mouth, lucky enough to be born into a fabulously rich family. You were probably schooled in the best exclusive schools that your parents’ money can buy. And perhaps you only hang out with the bourgeois crowd in some trendy and uber-cool spots that are out of reach for the common “bakya” crowd that you so horribly despise.
But sadly, Ms. Fernandez, how so out of sync you are with reality! I can take criticisms from foreigners with a grain of salt, since their observations may be due to their ignorance of our culture and values or lack of knowledge of the harsh realities of our country. But those criticisms coming from somebody who is at the very least aware of the situation of our countrymen is much harder to swallow. Or maybe there lies the problem. Maybe you were so preoccupied with your all your bling-blings and accessories to even notice that more than half of your kababayans live in abject poverty. While you were lying on the beach in Boracay sipping on your pinacolada, millions of our countrymen scavenge through dumpsters hoping to find their next meal. Or maybe you’re not shocked about all this. Maybe you just don’t care at all.
The point is, Ms. Fernandez, not all Filipinos are as lucky in life as you. That is precisely the reason why millions of us are forced by necessity, and not by choice, to work abroad in search of greener pastures. True, a lot of us OFW’s may work as domestic helpers or construction workers (not the kind of people you want to be trapped with in any of your flights), but do understand that we’re just trying to make a decent and honest living to better our lives and the lives of those we love back home. We still believe there is dignity in labor, not like the corrupt politicians and greedy businessmen that bleed our country dry. And mind you, this comes as a big sacrifice for us; oftentimes we pay through our blood, sweat and tears.
So the next time you fly into Dubai or somewhere else stuck for several hours with the baduy crowd in economy class (by the way, why didn’t you fly first class or business class if you didn’t want all these hassles???), rather than slash your wrists in despair, do stop and think for a moment why this diaspora is happening. Think of the sacrifices that these people are willing to make for the sake of their families and loved ones. And before you write any insensitive comments in that column of yours, try to be more prudent and circumspect. You may be writing your thoughts nonchalantly just to beat the deadline, but to do this at the expense of running roughshod over people’s feelings and sensibilities is just plain selfish.
Lastly, I honestly believe that no amount of expensive designer perfume can wash away the stench of a rotten heart. We maybe wearing Axe and Charlie cologne, but the inherent goodness of our hearts will make us fragrant to the people around us, and more importantly, to God.

i just got to read the article she wrote. i was laughing, not because i agree with her, but because it is futile to argue with someone who has a brain the size of a peanut!
eto lang ang ilan sa mga comment ko, aside from the others na andito at nasabi na:
1. parang name- and signature-dropping, pursuit ang article niya. Station 1 in Bora (where the most expensive resorts in bora are), her adidas all-terrain (nakakatawa, kasi palaos na ang style na yun!) and the havaianas comment (hello?! susmaryosep. sabihin mo na lang na flip flops or slippers! it isn’t as if siya lang ang may havaianas sa mundo! havaianas lang, iniyabang pa. haha!), and all the names of the persons she knows, purportedly elites. (pag iniwanan kaya natin sila lahat sa gubat ng basilan, maka-survive kaya sila?)
2. “i was dazzled by a beautiful white structure, so white it glistened in the sun!” >>> OMG. somebody teach her to write without sounding like a grade one pupil. and teach her to use words which would convey ideas in a more precise manner. “an oasis in the middle of the ISLAND”?! i’m laughing now! i know what she meant to say, but damn! nakakaiyak ang choice of words!
3. “the food… is fabulous as well. After seeing… and the fabulous…” gosh. fabulous na lang ba ang adjective sa mundo? she used “fabulous” a lot in the article. can you be more redundant? i wonder where she got her degree? does she even have one?! (or maybe she got her job as a writer by pulling strings. she is, after all, from the haves. sadly, you can have money, but it doesn’t buy you class, intelligence, or breeding.)
4. “i was on the cellphone… planning my impromptu trip…” Uh, since when do you plan something impromptu?! haha!
for the part about the airport and the OFWs, well, most of us have the same thoughts! i won’t delve on those na. on with the lambasting…
5. “caldero houses”? aren’t they called caldera houses? what an ignoramus.
6. three guesses of the real reason why a person like her would hate the beach! haha! I do not know the smell of axe or charlie cologne because i’m not using any of them. I just wonder how she knew these kinds of smell. di kaya yon ang ginagamit nya at yong mga katabi nya ay mga signature prefumes at cologne ang gamit?

In all probability, nagsisinungaling sya kasi marami sa kauri kong OFW ay di maingay na katulad ng sinasabi nya dahil gusto naming matulog lang para fresh pagbaba ng eroplano. Palagay ko pakiramdam nya ay siya na ang pinakamaganda sa lahat ng pinay pero it turned out na mas mukha syang basura at di sya makapaniwala na ang mga ofw na katabi nya ay mas maganda kesa sa kanya.
Ano kaya ang pinapanood nya at that time, baka yong may line na, “you are but a trying hard copycat.” o kaya yong pelikula ni ate vi na merong dialog na “ayaw ko ng masikip”.

You made a lot of people hate you with your harsh words and your horrible perspective on us OFWs. I hope you’re happy if this was what you were expecting. But if you’re concerned that you hurt a lot of people… I suggest you apologize sincerely because you made enemies within the OFW community not only in Dubai but the whole world for that matter.
Being part of the “elite” social class, you should obviously be a well educated person; you would not be in media if you weren’t, so I don’t have to point out our importance as OFWs to the country. But our importance should not be a reason to NOT belittle us. You should not deride us, or any other social class for that matter, because it is basically a very insensitive thing to do. Its something we Filipinos find very wrong. It is something that is just plain bad.
You just don’t say those things for whatever reasons you may have. Whether you’re just staying true to your “media persona/attitude” or for any agenda that only you may know. But if you said them because it’s your true self and the way you were educated and brought up, then please forgive me but clearly your character and morals are very appalling… it you do have morals at all.
You made the world so much harsher and much more difficult to live in.
…what someone who read your column would not give to be on the same plane with you to show you what a “little private hell” really means.

To Ms. Malu Fernandez, for sure you deserved every blessings God has provided you…especially, material things.. good for your then…but that doesn’t mean that you can discriminate people around you…we may not blessed with the things you are enjoying right now but for sure we are blessed with other things that you may be seeking for…i just hope that on your future columns, you will be more sensitive of the feelings of others and be more humble, because by that, you will earn our respect…
To all her critics, we may be hurt by the harsh words she has written but i think it is much better if we could just pray for her and people like her…the world doesn’t need another problem…let us be forgiving and accept that we cannot please everybody…and remember that it is better to understand than to be understood!!!

Mukhang napilitan na din sa wakas ang Manila (sub)Standard Today na mag-issue ng official reply tungkol sa Malu Fernandez Scandal. Ang kaso, imbes na magpaliwanag o humingi ng dispensa, sinusubukan pa nilang palabnawin yung isyu sa pamamagitan ng pag-gamit sa “we are all guilty” style. Pweh!

To start with, I’ve never heard of nor read anything written by a “someone” who considers herself as a “somebody” and goes by the name of “Malu Fernandez”. Oh yes I read newspapers everyday and The Manila Standard Today is one of them. Unless I was having mental diarrhea or my taste somewhat doesn’t pang for her type of so called “humor and acerbic wit,” she’s probably insignificant or too shallow for me.
I laud the editors of the Manila Standard Today and People Asia for publishing her articles in their pages presumably unadulterated. I need not expound on the difference between a JOURNALIST and a COLUMNIST, but each has moral standards and obligations to their readers. If any. She is right though when she wrote that …” if you don’t like what you read and if what I write offends you, just stop reading.” This maybe the reason why I NEVER got to read her until now.
Her observations of how Filipinos abroad treat and act towards each other is not uncommon to us FILIPINOS. It is a known fact that we FILIPINOS are a very sociable and hospitable bunch. And because of this inherent trait, we are more often than not, being misconstrued and taken advantaged of and ridiculed by other races. But that is beside the point. This kind of slam dished out by Ms. Fernandez against her “KABABAYANS” who are sacrificing being away from home and family to make a living is just too bitter a pill to swallow.
Oh yes I have rich friends. And yes I’ve heard them give remarks about other peoples fashion sense, intellectual ability, socio-economic standing, etc. BUT NOT TO THE POINT OF RIDICULE AND TOO DEROGATORY to make one squirm out of his/her own skin. How negatively nouveau. Yes I have underprivileged friends too. They also play the same game but more bare and freewheeling and not flourished with useless adjectives to hide their true intent. Her column was so direct it makes one wonder where she’s coming from doesn’t it?
If she thinks she is funny, fine. If she thinks she has acerbic wit, fine. Her friends thought her article was hilarious, fine. I challenge her to write an article about her so called “friends” in the style she did with the OFW’s. Let us see if they find it hilarious as well. She called herself a bitch, I couldn’t agree more.
She said: “Many people often find my direct attitude to be rude or obnoxious. I really don’t mean to be anything but true to myself.” Well, being true to ones’ self is indeed admirable, so does having patience which she said she sorely lacks. Hasn’t she stopped to consider that the OFW’s she flew in coach with and was lambasted by her in her Fierce & Fabulous column, are just being true to themselves. Added to that, instead of a direct apology, she sprinkled salt on the cut she made with “Am I being a diva? Or do you lack common sense?” She’s got more than her fair share of CRAB MENTALITY and total DISRESPECT. That is direct attitude for you. After her article, it wasn’t a surprise that these same OFW’s and those who share their sensibilities were obnoxiously rude to her as well. Tit for Tat.
I am tempted to give her more than a piece of my mind. But come to think of it, why would I STOOP DOWN to her level? Wait a minute, I already did. For good cause. And I am not ashamed of it either. I AM JUST BEING TRUE TO MYSELF and I have no PATIENCE with anyone who steps and defames his/her own race just to be noticed. Maybe, just maybe, if the politicians in her family are doing even half of their elected job, there won’t be too many OFW’s that she loathes so much, with her in coach, so she can be comfortable. Come to think of it. If you are a privileged person, why fly in coach? I am not done yet.
She states: “Most people don’t get the fact that they need bitches like me to shake up their world, otherwise their lives would be boring and mediocre.”
I say: She may consider herself privileged but now she found out that OFW’s are PEOPLE and not that dumb nor that stupid to just accept her fecal kind of inane writing. Congratulations to her for finally being taken noticed of.
Oh yes I need bitches alright. But not her kind. The kind of bitch I want is the one that can give me “PUPPIES.” Puppies that will eventually grow up as loving companion dogs that will wag its tail with glee and show me and my kin unconditional affection no matter what. I have no need for a kind of self-serving bitch that waddles and shakes up my world literally with its every step and wag of its offensively insensitive and discriminatory tongue.
I admittedly have stooped down to her level to shake up her world and topple that imaginary pedestal she plops, not prop, herself onto. And I am proud to say that I AM A FILIPINO albeit using a foreign language for this comment.
In conclusion, I may have never been to Greece yet, but I am proud to say that I have been to the farthest North and farthest South of the Philippines. I enjoyed and continually enjoy what each and every province has to give. Wholeheartedly offered by the people who may have had family members on that Emirates flight in coach.

This is definitely one of Malu Fernandez’”serious trepidations”. She bravely took an economy class seat on Emirates. She should be braver this time to face the consequences of her stupid actions. I suggest she’ll go somewhere where there are no Filipinos, maybe in another planet, “a place that she’s never been before”, “pick a country”, planet instead, and build her own “temperature-controlled room”. No one wants her to be “stuck” here in the Philippines. What a pity… She won’t even be able to handle her “overweight hand-carries”… and herself…

Totoo, if she is rich dapat nasa business class sya at gaga nga ang walanghiya at walang utak nag second trip pa sya ng economy class dahil siguro sa raffle lang nya napanalunan yung ticket nya. Ano ba yang Jo Malone na yan comparing sa mga ginagamit natin dito. Sa mga mall mo lang mabibili dito sa Saudi kahit saan at afford ng all level. That feature is not a bit funny and down right cheap and disgusting. If she’s really “it” - a first class upgrade would have been easy especially if she is a Platinum/Gold/Titanium/Plutonium member of all frequent fliers, or at least she should have taken 2 seats in that cabin if her ass won’t fit in. If she’s well traveled, she should have known better how to overcome such a predicament. Or better yet, get a freaggin private jet. Anyway, that’s what real Divas do. Hehehe
On her Boracay Trip, is she sure the villa is located in Boracay Island to begin with? Vacationing in an estero is no Boracay darling… My trips in Boracay are always fantastic and worthwhile. And when did it become appropriate spraying insecticides on an open area? Where the hell the manners you’ve learned from your “buena familia” had gone?
About her “apology” – it’s a mere show only, very insincere and even proud.
